Did you know that Florida author Patrick D. Smith’s ever-popular novel, A Land Remembered, was turned down by 15 publishers before it was accepted by the at-that-time new publisher, Pineapple Press? It’s hard to believe now that no one wanted to publish such a beloved book. But Pineapple Press made a smart move as the book has now sold well over 250,000 printed copies. It is fast growing as an e-book (available on Kindle and NOOK) and just came out as a graphic novel. The audiobook continues strong sales decades after it was first released.

A Land Remembered was a very important title for Pineapple Press and has helped sustain them ever since it first appeared in 1984. They also publish several of Smith’s other novels including Forever Island, Allapattah, Angel City, The Beginning, and The River is Home.

After many successful years in business, Pineapple Press was just acquired by the Rowman Littlefield Publishing Group and will become an imprint of Globe Pequot, the trade division of Rowman & Littlefield. Based in Guilford, Connecticut, Globe Pequot manages a wide range of Rowman & Littlefield’s publishing imprints that specialize in titles on regional interest, lifestyle, and culture.

Rowman & Littlefield recognize the importance of novels such as A Land Remembered. In fact, in their press release announcing the acquisition of Pineapple Press, the only title specifically mentioned by Rowman & Littlefield was A Land Remembered.

A Land Remembered grows in popularity every year, which is unusual for a book that has been in print for 35 years. It is largely due to the help of people like you who enjoys the book and tells others about it.

We’re going to make sure that the new publisher understands the size and devotion of the novel’s fan base. With new energy and renewed enthusiasm to promote these titles, we expect good things ahead for A Land Remembered and the other titles of Patrick D. Smith under the new owners.

    Rick,

A Land Remembered is my favorite all time book. I cannot tell you how many copies I have given away to my friends and family. I have enjoyed his other books also. I hope you have a long and profitable relationship with the new publishers.

As a 4th generation Floridian, I found the book extremely interesting and well written. Now eager to read The River is Home and others.
